New 2025 Nigerian Passport Renewal Process: 10 things you must know

In 2025, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) introduced a Contactless Passport Application System, allowing Nigerians to renew their passports without visiting an embassy or consulate for biometric data capture.

General Changes to the Process (2025 Update)

  • No More Physical Appearance for Biometrics – If your biometric data is already in the system from a previous passport, you DO NOT need to visit the Nigerian embassy or consulate for biometrics again.
  • Online Application & Processing – The process, including document submission and payments, is now online.
  • Home Delivery of Passport – Some locations now allow direct mailing of the renewed passport to applicants.
  • Faster Processing Times – Renewals are now expected to take less than 3 weeks, compared to previous delays of several months.

Key Features of the NIS Mobile App:

  • The NIS Mobile app, available on Android, allows applicants to complete the entire passport renewal process.
  • Biometric Data: The app enables users to capture their facial and fingerprint biometrics using their smartphone, eliminating the need for in-person appointments.
  • The app is available on Google Playstore (NIS MOBILE).
  • It can be used on compatible Android mobile devices. The app will be made available for iOS users in due course.
  • It is an intelligent app (i.e., the app guides the users through the process).
  • It guarantees the integrity of individuals’ data.
  • It can only be used for passport renewal.
  • The app employs a three-way image verification system to guarantee its security.
  • Both payment and capturing of biometrics are integrated into the app.

How to Access the NIS Mobile App – Android Users: Step-by-Step Process

  1. Download and install the app from the relevant mobile app store (Google Playstore- NIS MOBILE), create a profile, and activate your account using a valid email.
  2. Click on the ‘passport application services’ tab on the landing page.
  3. Proceed with the passport application process as indicated and ensure you choose the self-enrolment option.
  4. Make a payment and note your application ID and Reference No.
  5. Click the contactless biometric enrollment option on the passport application services.
  6. Input your application ID and reference number as required to check eligibility and proceed.
  7. If you are not eligible, proceed to book an appointment via the NIS passport application portal (int.immigration.gov.ng).
  8. If eligible, proceed with biometric enrolment and submit it appropriately.
  9. Mail your current passport to the applicable embassy with a self-addressed envelope (refusal to comply with this means that you will not receive your newly produced passport).
  10. Wait for your passport to be delivered to the address indicated on your envelope within the stated timeline.

Application Process:

  1. Register: Create a new account or log in using your existing credentials.
  2. Initiate Renewal: Select the passport renewal option and enter your National Identification Number (NIN) to auto-fill personal details.
  3. Capture Biometrics: Use your smartphone to capture facial and fingerprint biometrics as guided by the app.
  4. Payment: Choose a digital payment method to complete the application fee.
  5. Track Application: Monitor the status of your application directly through the app.

This digital transformation aims to enhance convenience, security, and efficiency in the passport renewal process for Nigerians worldwide.

Final Notes: Eligibility

  • The new system applies ONLY to renewals— no more than 6 months to the expiration of the current passport. If you have more than 6 months to the expiration of the current passport or you’re getting a passport for the first time, you must still visit an embassy for biometrics.
  • Service is only available for the reissue of an existing passport (no correction of data, lost case, or other exceptional cases).
  • Available for persons aged 18 – 60 years.
  • Be sure to check with your local Nigerian embassy for specific mailing options, as some countries still require in-person pickup.
  • Avoid third-party agents—always use the official NIS portal to prevent fraud.

An Interview with Moses Ngwanah – Living in Madagascar with Family

Living in Madagascar – With Family
How did your spouse and kids adjust to their new home?
Adapting to life in a new country can be challenging, regardless of its development status. Madagascar, in particular, presented unique aspects such as its location, culture, and climate. Fortunately, the presence of a large community of Cameroonians and expatriates in Antananarivo helped ease the integration process for my children. Additionally, the availability of international schools made it easier for them to acclimate to their new environment.
How did you find enrolling your kids into the schools here? Would you recommend local schools or International Schools?
There are a lot of international schools in English, French, German and even Chinese.
What is the process of renewing your visa like? What type of visas are available to expats and the costs?
The resident card (Visa) costs about 400usd. But it is a straightforward process.
How easy or complex is it to rent accommodation and what is the process like?
The real estate market is big, especially in Antananarivo. Renting is simple, however, expat residential areas are expensive.
In my opinion, the best neighbourhoods for expats to live in the city are Ivandry, Ivato and I will rate the accommodation at 7/10.
Utilities (Electricity and water) are affordable, however, only 1 in 4 people in Madagascar has access to electricity. Even those who do, have it for less than 10 hours a day.
What type of laws are there that protect women and children?

Just like any French-speaking African country. Women still do not benefit from affirmative laws.

What have you learned from Madagascar that you’d implement in your home country if you had the opportunity?

The community’s structure requires all residents to register with their local Fokotany and participate in maintaining security, cleanliness, and infrastructure in their neighbourhood. Approval from the Fokotany is necessary for all administrative tasks, making the system highly effective in managing cities like Douala and Yaounde.

Any final advice for someone who wishes to come live in this country?
Madagascar is a beautiful country. Visit if you can.

Expat Interview – Living in Madagascar, here’s what you must know

Like many people, I knew Madagascar as the title of one of my favourite animated films until very recently when a friend started living in Madagascar. I mean the actual country. It dawned on me that Madagascar is a country where not only Alex and his friends can escape from New York, but expats can relocate to live and work there too. Due to my curiosity about how expats experience life in different countries, I interviewed my friend to share his experiences living in Madagascar.
What’s your name?
Moses Ngwanah
What country are you originally from?
Cameroon
Where do you currently live?
Madagascar
Why did you move here and what do you currently do?
I relocated to Madagascar to provide expertise in establishing a domestic airline with a regular flight schedule. The goal was to expand an existing general aviation business into a full-fledged commercial airline that could provide both domestic and regional services.
What is your impression about this country?
Madagascar possesses vast potential due to its abundant biodiversity and mineral resources. Despite this, the country has faced obstacles to its development such as poor governance, Corruption, restrictive (Protectionism) economic policies, and insufficient infrastructure. However, there are indications that Madagascar is making progress, particularly in the tourism sector, which may help unlock its growth potential.
Despite this, the Malagasy people take pride in their language and heritage, and the country is very proud of its national emblems.

Living in Madagascar – Lemurs
Can foreigners easily get a job here and eventually relocate?

Madagascar has a high expatriate population compared to other French-African countries, with many senior positions filled by expats from various backgrounds, including Europeans, Africans, and Asians. Securing a job in the country is possible, but learning the local language is essential for integration. While the local workforce is smart and creative, expats are still needed in certain industries.

In light of this, the answer is affirmative.

What is the process of obtaining a work permit from your home country?
It is straightforward. Your employer has to apply to the Economic Development Board of Madagascar(EBDM). It takes an average of 60 days to obtain a work permit.
What is the work culture in Madagascar like?
In Madagascar, as in many African countries, people value their jobs and also prioritize their time for socializing. Professional relationships at work are kept separate from personal relationships, with few employees forming friendships with their colleagues outside the office. Trust and loyalty are not common values for a typical Malagasy worker. As an expatriate, you may need to spend more time supervising your team than actually doing the work yourself. Trusting your colleagues to meet deadlines or take initiative may not be common practice.
What can you highlight about income tax in Madagascar?
The income tax rate is set at 20%. Many expatriates and their associated businesses opt to use offshore accounts to avoid paying taxes in this jurisdiction, which hurts the local economy. This situation is well known, yet nobody speaks up about it.

2. LIVING IN MADAGASCAR – LIFESTYLE

What do you enjoy most about living in Madagascar? What is the local lifestyle like?
Madagascar has a unique climate, architecture, and nightlife, especially in its coastal towns. The country also boasts stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and an abundance of flora and fauna. Malagasy people tend to be closed off and rarely go out, unless from the upper echelons of society. It is also interesting to note that the people of Antananarivo do not consider themselves African. Work culture is weak and it is more common to see people begging on the street than holding a job. Poverty is a major issue in the country, with a high amount of children birthing children due to the lack of resources.
What are the pros and cons of living here?
Pros: The country has a good climate, is naturally beautiful and is politically stable. Malagasy people are generally easygoing but mostly introverts.
Cons:  Madagascar is geographically distant from other countries, with high costs in affluent neighbourhoods, a limited middle class, significant safety issues in impoverished areas and an inadequate urban transportation system. Additionally, there is a distorted view of African people, specifically black Africans, in the country.
What are the biggest adjustments you have had to make?
The biggest adjustment is to read body language. A typical Malagasy may never tell you yes or no, but if you pay attention to his/her body language you could get hints.
What should expats know about the weather before moving here?
Winter temperatures are as cold as 8 Degrees Celsius and Summer can go as high as 35 degrees in Antananarivo. In the regions, it is hotter and can even go up to 40 degrees Celsius.
What is the cost of living here compared to your home country?
The cost of living here is relative to where you live in the city and your preferences. Generally, Madagascar is cheaper than Cameroon, but some areas are not. For example, the health system is rudimentary at best and if you need anything serious, it is expensive. Alcoholic drinks (whisky, wine etc) are a lot more expensive compared to Cameroon.

Public transportation in Antananarivo offers contrasting experiences. Buses can be overcrowded and inexpensive, costing around 0.11 cents per trip, while taxis are pricey despite their aged vehicles.

What are your thoughts on the healthcare system? Have you got info foreigners should be aware of?
The healthcare system is Broken and arguably one of the worst in Africa. 90% of expats have personal insurance and are always Medically airlifted overseas for care.
How would you rate public transport?  What is the most memorable experience of using public transport?
As an expatriate, it is essential to own a car to plan and carry out tasks effectively. My personal experience dates back to my early days in Antananarivo during the COVID-19 pandemic. I once requested a taxi to take me to a supermarket (Renault 4CV). The driver was unable to speak French and quoted me a price in FMG (Franc Malagasy), an outdated currency that had been out of circulation since December 2004. A kind person intervened to help me convert the amount to Ariary. I later found out from a colleague that I had been overcharged. The challenges continued as I struggled to open the car door and noticed the worn-out seats. To my surprise, the driver used a small 5-litre container in the bonnet of the car as a makeshift fuel tank. Despite the language barrier, we managed to communicate mostly through gestures during the journey to the supermarket. I still gave him a tip though lol.
What are the popular and recommended cars to use while in this country?
Popular Cars here are marks from China. However, German cars are also of high use. But the most popular are Kia, Hyundai, Chevrolet, GAC, HAVAL, and Ford.
What are the biggest safety issues for expats living here?
Pickpocketing.
What are the telecom companies available in Madagascar?
Telma, orange and Airtel. Telma is the best and has good connectivity. Better than many African countries especially Cameroon.
Is it popular to travel by air within the country?
The only answer to moving from one part of the country to the other is by Air. Air connectivity for domestic travel is highly developed compared to most African countries, however, the market is underserved.
How has living in Madagascar been beneficial to you?
Learning and adapting to different ways of communication, asserting power and authority, management etc.
What do you wish you had known before relocating here?
Firstly, saying “yes” does not always indicate true agreement until actions align with the words. Secondly, having confidence in someone does not mean relinquishing control over the situation.
What’s the minimum salary(income) to guarantee a decent standard of living in Madagascar?
For an expat 2000 USD
Are you part of any associations or do you associate solely with expats?
Aviation and the Cameroonian community

Here’s what you need to know about living as an Expat in Aberdeen

0

Aberdeen is often referred to as the oil and gas capital of Europe. The number of jobs created by the energy in and around Aberdeen is estimated at half a million (source Wikipedia). This industry attracts many skilled workers to Aberdeen, like several other cities across the UK. In this interview, we speak to an expat who moved to Aberdeen from Malaysia. Currently, in his 3rd year in Aberdeen, he has a few things to share with anyone considering living as an expat in Aberdeen.

What are your names and what country are you originally from?

Sunday Ibagere and I am a Nigerian

Where do you currently live?

Aberdeen, UK

Why did you move here?

Job relocation from Malaysia.

LIFESTYLE – AS AN EXPAT IN ABERDEEN

What do you enjoy most about living here? What is the local lifestyle like?

Aberdeen has lots of family-friendly communities. The locals are generally warm and receptive, once they get familiar with you. You will even find people giving you a warm smile while walking the streets.

What are the things you do not enjoy about Aberdeen/UK?

The high and progressive tax system

The weather (Winter) could be depressing if you have not built a solid community.

The health service bureaucracy.

Do you think it is easy to get a job in the UK?

I moved here as an expat, so I did not have to look for a job. However, I think there is a high demand for highly skilled and even unskilled labor in the job market.

If you are in the country, it may not be as hard to get a job however, employers in the UK value experience more than certificates. So, if you can prove that you have the required skills for the role you are looking to apply for then yeah you can always get something doing.

A lot more in the south and midlands of the UK than in Aberdeen per se.

What do you wish you had known before relocating here?

Difficulty in accessing credit facilities. As a foreigner, you need up to 2 years to build credit and get a good/acceptable credit score from most lenders.

What are your thoughts about the weather and what should expats know about the weather before moving here?

The weather (Winter) could be depressing if you haven’t built a solid community. The experience of white Christmas might be fulfilling for some, but for others, it’s a nightmare in terms of commuting and having great outdoor time. Generally, the problem is your attire rather than the weather. Keeping warm is a non-negotiable, if you aren’t conversant with -5*c to <10*c temperature for most part of the year in Aberdeen.

Talk about the income tax system in this country. What can you highlight about income tax in the country?

You pay Scottish Income Tax if you live in Scotland. It’s paid to the Scottish Government and applies to your wages, pension, and most other taxable income. Personal Income tax differs within the United Kingdom, but you’ll pay the same tax as the rest of the UK on dividends and savings interest. The table shows the 2023 to 2024 Scottish Income Tax rates.

What is the work culture here like? And what are the things expats/foreigners should know about this work environment?

Work Culture – Overall, it is a people-first culture. Hence everyone understands their rights and privileges and expects them to be respected. Generally, like many countries around the world, most people are in the 8-5 jobs with Friday being half-day for most corporate structures. Weekends are for family and friends, not colleagues or work. It’s a critical point to understand and avoid reaching out to colleagues on their days off, weekends, or vacations.

Know your colleagues – Establish that honest and keen relationship ASAP. Let them know you and understand your culture and where you come from. Also, be willing to learn about what is of interest to the locals. It’s important to understand the aspect of diversity and inclusion.

What do you think about the labor market and what kind of opportunities are available here?

Aberdeen, aka oil capital of Europe, implies, the majority of the workforce and job market is dominated by the O&G sector, followed by tourism and renewable energy. As per Aberdeen Key Facts Report 2021, 72.9% of the population is employed aged between 16-64. The age bracket is indicative of how early the residents start working (apprenticeship, internship, etc) which to me is a great take-home.

What is the process of obtaining a work permit from your home country?

The UK has varied entrance routes for work permits. Will refer to the UK Home Office for more information. I am under corporate sponsorship.

What is the cost of living here compared to your home country? What are the things you find cheap and what do you find expensive?

The cost of living in the UK is generally much higher than in Nigeria. Comparing Aberdeen to a state like Lagos, the latter is 53% less expensive than the former. Hence, a better standard of living.

How would you rate public transport? Must expats own a car? What is the most memorable experience of using public transport?

The city of Aberdeen is generally interconnected by public transport (bus, train, or public taxis). Generally, most if not all expats own a car(s). The memorable experience was our first day in Aberdeen, boarded a taxi from the airport to our accommodation and the driver didn’t refund my balance but immediately drove off after noticing where I work. Hence, I avoid unnecessary conversations with cab drivers. I will recommend the UBook app for taxi rides as you can pay directly by card.

What is the process of opening a bank account like? What do you think people should be aware of?

Generally, documents requested include but are not limited to, Employment confirmation from the Employer, proof of residential address, copy of passport & BRP.

What is the process of purchasing a car like? What are the popular and recommended cars to use while in this country?

Car purchase is generally a straightforward process, but a little cumbersome for expats especially Africans because of their lack of credit history. 1. Upon arrival, visit a bank and create a bank account ASAP. Generally, documents requested include but are not limited to, Employment confirmation from the Employer, proof of residential address, copy of passport & BRP. 2. I will generally recommend Peter Vardy (Carz) Aberdeen, based on the great service provided by Mr. Okey (Lang Stracht, Aberdeen AB16 6LA). 3. The Vauxhall Mokka, Grandland X, and Hyundai Tucson are great, affordable, and low-maintenance cars to use and once you are settled in, feel free to switch, if you haven’t felt the cost-of-living crisis yet LOL.

Healthcare optionsWhat are your thoughts on the healthcare system? Have you got info foreigners should be aware of?

Healthcare is managed by the National Health Service, NHS. You are required to register with a General Practitioner (GP) within your area of residence as every community has a GP service available. Private insurance is costly, but advisable, especially after the COVID pandemic where GP appointments felt like digging gold, to get one. However, you will only be seen by your private medical provider upon referral from an NHS GP. Emergency services operate 24/7 but could be frustrating with long waiting times.

What are the biggest safety issues for expats living here?

Safety has not been a major concern as this also depends on the community you live in.

expat in Aberdeen

Renting a house/Apartment/CondoWhat is the real estate market like in this country? How easy or complex is it to rent accommodation and what is the process like?

For most companies, expats are assigned relocation agents that will mitigate the challenge of searching for a house. However, I always recommend people perform a simple search online and talk with colleagues to find out about houses and the housing market in the city. Proximity to town is pricy but you get value for money within the shires.

Which are the best neighborhoods for expats to live in the city in your opinion and how would you rate accommodation in the City?

Westhill, Kingswells, Counteswells, Cult, Bridge of Don, etc are the places most will recommend and I will recommend them for families. Accommodation in the city center is void of private garden spaces, but suitable for people who love city life.

What is the minimum salary(income) to guarantee a decent standard of living in this country?

Personally, I think this depends on an individual’s lifestyle choices. The average Aberdeen salary in the UK is £32,909 per year or £16.88 per hour. Entry-level positions start at ~£25,000 per year while most experienced workers make up to £51,366 and above per year. You can check the Aberdeenshire salary scales here for more information.

Are you part of any associations or do you associate solely with expats?

As earlier mentioned, having a solid community around you is critical. Hence in addition to my church community, I am a member of the Association of Black & Minority Ethnic Engineers, as well as, Black Professionals Scotland and JCI Aberdeen.

LIVING WITH FAMILY AS AN EXPAT IN ABERDEEN

How did your spouse and kids adjust to their new home?

They found it pretty easy to integrate. There were no particular issues with settling in.

What’s the education system like? How did you find enrolling your kids into the schools here? Would you recommend local schools or International Schools?

The Public schools are free and available in respective communities. However, there are also private and international schools that range from ~£1k to ~£3K per month.

Funding is also made available by theUK government.

Visa Renewal – What is the process of renewing your visa like?

Generally, these are managed either individually or by respective immigration officers/employees in the company, depending on your contract.

Any last words for our audience?

Aberdeen is a lovely city. There is a lot to see and do in Scotland. While here, I’ll encourage you to explore as much as you can. Finally, there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad dressing. Always be ready for anything.

Studying in Aberdeen – I enjoy my relationship with my supervisors

Aberdeen, also known as the oil and gas city of Europe is home to many prominent universities like the University of Aberdeen, and RGU (Robert Gordon University) amongst others which attract thousands of International Students.

An International Student from Nigeria shares his study experience so far and this is what he has to say about studying in Aberdeen.

What are your names?

Ajinatswen Agbu Dawuda

What is your country of origin?

Nigeria

Why did you choose Aberdeen, Scotland as your study destination?

I got a scholarship

What exactly do you study there and why did you choose that course?

Electrical Engineering (Renewable Energy). I chose the course because of my background and work experience back home. Also because of my future plans.

What do you enjoy most about studying in this country?

It is my relationship with my supervisors that I enjoy most. I can contact them freely at any time through email and they are always accessible. I also have the liberty to re-schedule meetings whenever such meetings are not as convenient as initially scheduled.

What do you hate most about studying in Aberdeen?

The structure of Ph.D. research here is stressful, especially at the University I attend. You are left to yourself from start to finish, with your supervisors only guiding you but not necessarily making inputs and helping solve some academic challenges when they arise. Well, that may be common with all PhD students globally but in other places, PhD students start by taking courses in classes before research unlike here where from day 1 it is research.

How much does it cost to study your course in Aberdeen?

I am on a fully funded scholarship but I understand that my tuition is £20,000 per session but those that will come from the next session (2023/24) will pay £24,860 (Engineering Research).

Do International Students require insurance while studying there?

Students require Health Insurance and they pay that during the Visa application process. It is paid even before the visa is issued.

As a student, how do you meet up with your living expenses?

My scholarship covers my basic living expenses. International students can study and work (up to 20 hours during term time and full-time off term time).

How are study materials like textbooks, handouts, and information resources obtained? Or how are study materials accessed?

I access my study materials through the University library and from journals that University has subscribed to, giving us free access. However, there are a few instances where I have to pay for some study materials by myself.

How do International Students send or receive money? Are any limitations imposed?

There are different means by which international students can send or receive money. Personally, I have used “Lemonade” and “Ohentpay”. I also have a Dollar Account in my country with a Debit card, so sometimes money can be deposited in the account back home for me to use here (using my debit card).

Can you describe what accommodation is like for students? or what are the possible kinds of accommodation arrangements available to students to minimize cost?

Student accommodations are available in different forms – by University or privately. Then there are private flats that students can also lease. I lived in one of the privately owned student accommodations (Farmers Hall Lodge) for 5 months before leaving for a private flat. Usually, the University-owned accommodations are more expensive and less conducive but the difficulty of leasing a private flat (where guarantors and deposits are required) makes some students just settle for the university-owned accommodations – usually very easy to lease. A site that is helpful for student accommodation now is Spare Room where students can arrange to share flats.

Are there any negatives or things you wish you had known before going to study there? What is life generally like?

Personally, I made a lot of inquiries before coming to Aberdeen but there are still some “negatives” that if I had been aware of maybe I would have changed my mind about coming to Aberdeen – the stress at the University of Aberdeen and the limited jobs in the city compared to other places in England. But as a child of God, I see things differently, that is my consolation.

What was your experience with culture shock in this country and how did you navigate it?

Well, I did my Master’s in Japan and was there for 3 years. That was my first experience with culture shock and when I finally came out of it, I was prepared for life with people of diverse cultural backgrounds. Therefore, the culture shock here did not really get to me. I was just surprised at how students call their lecturers by their first names freely, this is still strange to me and I don’t think I will do that.

What is it like studying here post-pandemic? How has this affected you as an international student? And also what has generally changed for international students?

I was not here pre-pandemic so I may not be able to say much. I heard from those who were here before the pandemic that they now have more liberty – they can study from home and attend meetings virtually.

STUDYING IN ABERDEEN – DOCUMENT PROCESSING

Can you describe what the visa application process was like from your home country?

Mine was handled by my Sponsor, I was only given the form to complete and attach the necessary documents and then go for biometrics.

After admission, how long does it take to obtain a visa and what are the things to be noted?

After admission, the University needs to see that you can pay your fees by asking that the student makes a deposit of tuition fees (or show proof of scholarship) then they can issue the CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) that will be used for Visa application. I don’t know if the process is different for undergraduate students.

What is the duration of your student visa and how often do you need to get it renewed?

My visa was issued based on my course duration – 3 years. I will only ask for a renewal if I can’t graduate within 3 years and the renewal will be based on the extension of my studies that the University will grant me.

What happens to a student if their visa isn’t renewed?

They will be asked to leave the UK by the home office (with a particular deadline)

What are the consequences of overstaying your student visa?

Deportation, subsequent denial of visa by the UK and even other countries.

STUDYING IN ABERDEEN – LIFESTYLE

What kind of places do you think foreign students should avoid to guarantee their safety?

Well, I don’t know much about places that are unsafe here as my triangle most times is University-home-church besides shopping and work.

How do you commute to school and could you describe the transportation system and what are the best ways to commute?

I walk to the University. Students can use buses or bicycles.

What is the cost of living there compared to your home country and what are the things you consider cheap or expensive? Eg Food etc

The cost of living here is way higher than that of my home country. For example, my rent for one month here can pay for an equivalent space in my country for one year. Food is also more expensive here compared to my country.

What are the requirements for opening an account and why is it important to have a bank account?

My University gives a letter of introduction to banks for account opening purposes. That makes it so easy for us. It is very important to have a bank account because most transactions are cashless (by bank transfers or cards). Also when one starts working, payments are made only through bank accounts. Bank statements are also used sometimes for checks by potential employers.

What important things must international students remember when choosing a service provider eg Telecom, Energy, etc?

I think the cost and efficiency of the service providers. It is very important to make inquiries from people who have lived here for a while to help make informed decisions.

What are the local students like? In your opinion, is it easy to make friends with the locals?

At the PhD level, I can say it is easy and not easy. It depends on your personality and what you want. Most times we are busy and have no time to really make friends especially if we have friends in other places – like church, fellow countrymen, etc

Studying in Aberdeen

Now that you are already here, what are your thoughts about studying here?

I am taking it as it is, doing my best to maximize it, and focusing on the positives.

What advice can you give to a prospective International Student who desires to come here for studies? what must they know before deciding to embark on this journey?

They should be aware of the accommodation process and secure a place before leaving their country. They should not think there are jobs readily available for them when they come so they should come financially prepared as if they will be here for 6 months before they start working. They should also not think studying and living here is easy, so they need to mentally prepare themselves to be diligent here and also prepare to prioritize studies over looking for money (working).

UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman bans International students families to the UK

1

Suella Braverman has announced a ban on International students bringing dependent family members with them to the UK from 2024 due to the unexpected rise of net migration.

This announcement excludes postgraduate research students who arguably provide greater economic benefits.

Ms. Braverman said: “This package strikes the right balance between acting decisively on tackling net migration and protecting the economic benefits that students can bring to the UK.”

Suella Braverman said the rise in dependants being granted visas was “unprecedented,” and it was “time for us to tighten up this route to ensure we can cut migration numbers”.

“Now is the time for us to make these changes to ensure an impact on net migration as soon as possible. We expect this package to have a tangible impact on net migration.
“Taken together with the easing of temporary factors, we expect net migration to fall to pre-pandemic levels in the medium term.”

However, in the short to medium term, an uptick in people arriving does affect net migration estimates. This is because an increase in immigration should in theory be followed by an increase in emigration. But the expected emigration typically takes 2-3 years to materialize. This means that recent increases in work and study migration are expected to lead to temporarily higher estimates of net migration for at least 2-3 years before emigration catches up.

According to the migration observatory at the University of Oxford, Net migration is a commonly used measure of the overall scale of migration in the UK. It takes into account not just people moving to the country, but also those leaving. This helps understand migration’s contribution to population growth—especially since many people who move to the UK do not remain here permanently. However, the net migration measure has many flaws. For example, it tells us little about who is arriving and leaving or what their impacts are. It can also produce counterintuitive or misleading figures when migration patterns change substantially in a short period, as discussed further below. The UK is unusual in its choice to use net migration in policy debates as the main measure for discussing migration levels.

International Student figures are expected to hit record levels on Thursday crossing 700,000.

According to HESA, an education data group, there were 679,970 international students in the UK in 2021/2022.

Of these 307,470 were undergraduates, who already can’t bring family members to the UK during their course.

There were 372,500 postgraduates, of whom 46,350 are on research courses – the vast majority of them for PhDs, along with a small number of research-based masters degrees.

Students coming to the UK with a visa need to provide documents proving their relationship to dependents, and must pay £490 for a visa.

Dependants are also required to pay the immigration health surcharge – an annual contribution between £470 and £624 towards NHS services.
