Dr Richard Munang appointed Deputy Regional Director for UNEP Africa

Climate change is real with the last four years being the hottest on record. According to a September 2019 World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report, we are at least one degree Celsius above preindustrial levels and close to what scientists warn would be “an unacceptable risk”.

We have seen and experienced extreme weather conditions from heat waves, to droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes causing mass destruction around the world. 90 percent of disasters are now classed as weather- and climate-related, costing the world economy 520 billion USD each year, while 26 million people are pushed into poverty as a result.

In an article by Dr Richard Munang, “Africa is heating up twice as fast as the rest of the globe, and with 20 countries already warming faster, this means that the safe threshold of 1.5℃ will be breached faster in Africa than in any other region. But climate change is only one red flag.” A lot needs to be done.

With this, we would like to announce and congratulate Dr. Richard Munang on his appointment as the Deputy Director of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) regional office to drive the delivery of UNEP’s programmes in Africa.

Dr Munang has built a wealth of experience in climate change when he joined UNEP in 2009 as the Climate change adaptation and development policy coordinator for Africa to his appointment in 2022 as Deputy Regional Director for UNEP.

In an interview with CRTV on his new role as the Deputy Regional Director for UNEP in Africa, Dr. Richard Munang ” A healthy planet translates to healthy people and healthier economies and it is upto us to ensure this happens.”

“In my position I hope to bring thought leadership working with colleagues across the entire UN development system in the african continent towards ensuring member states and stake holders are supported with addressing 3 of the leading crisis of our time ie Biodiversity laws, climate change polution and waste. This will be addressed in a manner that unlocks investment and ensure there is food on the table and money in more pockets in Africa, ensuring the right policies and incentives are put on place and the right investments are put in place in ensuring that environmental challenges into opportunities.”

Dr Richard Munang

What fuels his passion in climate change? In his book “Making Africa work through the power of Innovative Volunteerism” Dr. Richard Munang highlights his childhood and the first time he experienced the devastating impact climate change had on his mother’s farm in the village. It really frustrated him to witness his mother’s tireless efforts in tilling their farmland, only met by failing rains and much-diminished harvest. To see old rivers ebb away. This built his curiosity and pondered on what could be done to salvage the situation.

This fueled his passion so much that after his education in Cameroon he enrolled for a Ph.D. and in 2008 he earned a Ph.D. in Environmental climate and policy from Nottingham University UK.

Dr Richard Munang believes in the power and resilience of Africa’s youth which he mentors across the continent through his innovative volunteerism program with the objective of turning waste into opportunity. He also believes a clear purpose inspires purposeful passion which becomes the fuel to drive solutions towards an unborrowed vision. The time has come for everyone to develop an unborrowed vision tied to a very clear purpose of solutions fuelled with a purposeful passion that combines their skills and talents to come up with solutions to turn challenges into opportunities that benefit Africa as a whole.

We wish Dr Richard Munang an impactful time in his office as Deputy Regional Director for UNEP Africa and we look forward to all the policy changes in biodiversity, climate change, and waste management.

Expat Interview – Here’s what you need to know about Living in the DRC

The Democratic Republic of Congo, also known as Congo-Kinshasa is a country in Central Africa. Its enormous size makes it, by area, the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa, the second-largest in all of Africa, and the 11th-largest in the world.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is extremely rich in natural resources but has suffered from political instability, a lack of infrastructure, corruption, and centuries of both commercial and colonial extraction and exploitation with little widespread development.

In this expat interview, Kizita shares with me her experience and thoughts living in the DRC as an expat.

What part of the country do you currently reside in?

I currently live in Bunia in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Why did you move to this country? And what do you currently do?

I moved to the DRC for work and I work for the United Nations as a Program Manager

How did you find the job you currently do?

I found my job online. All UN jobs are published on the website

Can you briefly explain the process of obtaining an expat visa for this country?I have the UNLP (United Nations Laissez-Passer) which is a secure travel document issued by the United Nations for its representatives and staff members with international assignments.  It is recognized as a valid travel document by the Member States so I usually do not need a visa. However, the recruiting office will facilitate the process by providing the necessary documents to secure a visa. The visa request process is paid for by the recruiting office.

What was the relocation process like?
It wasn’t too bad as I was moving from Somalia to the DRC which in my opinion is a much friendlier country. I am quite used to relocating at short notice so I packed my bags and pretty much hopped on the plane. You would however receive an onboarding document from the recruiting office which tells you pretty much what you need to know about the country and placement. Your ticket is bought and any transit hotel bills paid.

What do you wish you had known before relocating to the DRC?

I wish I knew how expensive living here is.

What do you enjoy most about living here and what is the quality of life in the DRC?

I enjoy the fact that there is access to organic food. The DRC is such a huge country with the quality of life drastically different in Kinshasa as compared to other parts of the country. Generally, the currency most accepted is the USD and there’s a high expatriate concentration in the country which also explains why basic services are quite pricey.

The local population in some parts of the country have gone through years and years of conflict and this has influenced very much their perspectives with regards to the government and the military. In other words ‘not trusted’. This distrust is also extended to the international community to an extent.

The Big cities have a lot of amenities – fancy hotels and restaurants.  A lot of investment has been made in the sector of education with a lot of primary and higher education institutions across the country.

How has working in a foreign country through the pandemic been for you?

Luckily, the first 8 months of the pandemic had me working from home. I am back at my duty station but the health and security restrictions are still a challenge.

What are the challenges you have faced and are there any negatives about living here?

The security situation. There are so many restrictions for international staff.

Is the city reasonably safe for foreigners?
Yes. Kinshasa the capital city is pretty safe.

How would you rate public transport? What are the different options for commuting? Must you own a car?

The road network is underdeveloped and travel from province to province is usually done by air. For those who cannot afford air travel which is very expensive, other options like buses and boats exist but this could take days… depending on the destination.

What is the healthcare system like? How would you rate healthcare? And what should expats know prior to relocating?

Health care is still below acceptable levels. If you do have prescription medications, it is important to come with your medications.

How would you rate accommodation/housing? And which are the safest areas to live in?

The houses are very modern and beautiful but also very expensive.
To me, the safest place to live in the DRC is in Kinshasa.

What is the cost of living here compared to your home country? What are the things you find relatively affordable? And what are the things you find expensive?

DRC is definitely more expensive

What’s the best advice you’d like to offer a new or prospective expat to this location?

DRC is a beautiful country with a lot of potential. However, very volatile as the security situation changes rapidly. Congolese are generally friendly but take your time to trust them. It’s also a very expensive country, especially in the big cities

Types of Visas you can apply to stay in the UAE

The United Arab Emirates offers many opportunities to work and live in the country. However, in the past, it has been very rigid in its laws, with a ‘one visa fits all’ method.  This is no longer the case, as the UAE government has issued other visa types that will benefit foreigners in different situations – from employed expats, to self-employed, to remote workers.  You can now apply for a visa that suits your personal situation and requirements.

Employment Visa

The UAE Residence visa is issued to individuals who have found employment in the country.  This visa lasts as long as your employment contract, which is usually 2 years, and is then renewed after 2 years as long as the same company still employs you.  This type of visa has been the only option for expats in the United Arab Emirates for many years.  The main advantage of the employment visa is the fact that it comes with job security and you have secured a visa as long as you stay with the same employer.  Your company also opens a bank account on your behalf saving you a lot of hassle.

Remote Worker Visa

When Covid struck the entire globe in 2020, it brought about a new trend of working at home to help companies stay afloat.  This has since become a viable option for workers to work remotely, allowing a balance of work and personal life. The UAE government created this visa to allow expats from all over the work to work remotely while living in UAE and enjoying the vibrant life that the country has to offer.  It is a one-year visa that allows foreigners to live in the UAE under self-sponsorship. You get to work by the beach, in a coffee shop, or hotel.  You can also rent a coworking space that offers the support you need on a daily basis.

Golden Visa

The Golden visa is another new visa type that was launched in the UAE in 2021.  This visa offers long-term residence to expats and is targeted toward talented foreigners who work in certain industries such as health (particularly frontline heroes), technology, and science. The visa is also for talented individuals who are in culture, arts, sports, and technology.  Investors, especially those who invest in real estate are eligible for the Golden visa. They are required to own property (including offplan property) that is worth AED2 million and above. Entrepreneurs who own or partner in startups and businesses are eligible for this visa, as long as their business generates nothing less than AED1 million in annual revenue.

The Golden visa also covers outstanding students and graduates studying in the country, and those in humanitarian work.  Professionals eligible for this visa are required to hold a bachelor’s degree and must have a monthly salary of no less than AED30,000.

The Golden visa offers expats 10 years of residence in the UAE and is a self-sponsored visa which means one does not need an employment sponsorship. This visa is beneficial to expats looking to settle in the country for a long time.  The Golden visa covers the applicant’s family and should the primary holder cancel their residency or pass away, the family members will be allowed to stay in the UAE until the end of the visa’s duration.

The Green Visa

The Green visa is similar to a normal residency visa, but it is more diverse, accommodating different circumstances. The Green Visa is a self-sponsoring visa that is valid for 5 years.  This visa covers family members as well and offers security to stay in the country should the primary visa holder cancel or pass away.  This visa allows permits for spouse, children and first-degree relatives.  Children can remain sponsored by this visa upto the age of 25 years (no age limit for unmarried daughters). Another benefit of the green visa is that it offers a longer grace period of 6 months stay in the country after the cancellation or expiry of the residence permit. This gives the visa holders time to plan their next move.  The Green Visa is for more than just employees, but also for self-employed and freelancing expats.  They are required to have a bachelor’s degree or diploma in educational history. They are also required to show proof of annual income for the past 2 years, to prove that their financial status is enough to survive throughout their stay in the country.

Investors can also apply for this visa.  This replaces the previous visa for investors that was only valid for 2 years.  Those eligible for the visa are foreigners that are investing in the country’s commercial activities.  They must show proof of investment and the total invested capital.  Approval from local authorities is also required to be eligible for this visa.

If you are looking to move to the United Arab Emirates, these are your visa options.  Do your research and find out more about this before making your move.  This will also benefit expats currently living in UAE under an employment visa and are looking to change to a more flexible option. For more information on the different visas available for application, visit the United Arab Emirates Government Portal:https://u.ae/en/information-and-services/visa-and-emirates-id

You can also contact the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security, as well as the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs for Dubai residents for more information.

Planning for the application of your Cameroon Passport in the USA – Here are some DON’Ts

  • It is advised you refrain from purchasing a flight ticket or from finalizing their travel arrangements UNTIL AFTER you receive the renewed passport.
  • You can ONLY collect your Cameroon passport from the location where the physical enrollment took place. Indeed, a new passport must be activated electronically at the physical enrollment location to be usable by its beneficiary. It is after the activation process that the beneficiary receives an email/text message notification. Hence, if you applied at the Embassy in Washington, DC, it is not permitted for a third party to collect the passport in Cameroon on your behalf.
  • If you do not possess a valid passport and you need to travel urgently to Cameroon, please consider applying for a Cameroonian Travel Document (Laissez-Passer) which will enable you to travel ONLY TO CAMEROON. You must renew your passport there prior to returning to the United States or to your country of residence. Note that a passport can be produced in Yaounde within 48 hours.

10 tips to landing your dream Job in Dubai in 2022

In this article, you will learn everything you need to know about the strategies to apply and get a job in Dubai in 2022.

Dubai is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world increasing at the rate of 10.7% annually.

Dubai is known for its high-paying jobs and luxurious lifestyles as well as an expanding service industry. The service industry accounts for more than 70% of the total GDP. This is one of the reasons why Dubai is a favorite destination for Expats and people from all works of life. Thus having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world.

How to get a job in Dubai

Getting a job in a market like this requires passion, commitment, competitiveness, and hard work. Here are my top tips for getting a job in Dubai

LEARN ABOUT THE JOB MARKET

The UAE is a relatively competitive market. This is because it is an attraction for global talent. Learning the job market and in-demand skills is fundamental and is the first vital step that you should take before proceeding to travel to Dubai.

Dubai’s economy has many sectors in which you can get a job in Marketing, Finance, IT, Insurance,  Tourism,  Construction,  Sales, Healthcare, Banking, Hospitality, Catering, and Food industries etc

You need to focus on what you are skilled at and do research on the companies in your field. You can be skillful at something but your skills are not in demand in a specific environment.

That is why it is important to find out first if your skills are in demand or if your industry is lacking in Dubai before you go there. If not build the required skills and experience you need before relocating.

It will also help you to be confident in applying because you will know what you are getting yourself into.

To know the job market in Dubai you need to do the following:

  • Learn about the economy, cost of living, and standard of living, so you know what to expect.
  • Find out about the average salaries so you can know how to negotiate a reasonable remuneration.
  • Get to know about the customs and manners of the country, so you look polite in each interview.
  • Learn about the labor laws because it is essential to know your rights and duties as a future employee.

PLAN AND ORGANIZE YOUR SEARCH FOR JOBS IN DUBAI

It is best that you organize yourself so you can find the best opportunity. Find out about the companies that are related to your field and know what they do.

Make a list of these companies and start looking for their open positions. You should use search engines to do your research, you get the company’s website and visit it. There you will see if there are any job openings and apply.

Make a record of the jobs that you apply for including the date so that you know how long it takes to receive a call.

Make a record of the companies to which you sent your CVs and note which CV you sent to which particular company. It could be disappointing for a recruiter to ask you a question on a page of your CV and you are unable to recognize what he or she is referring to because you have an alternative CV.

Follow these companies on LinkedIn and network with staff who work there. It’s important not to harass persons online as you do not want to be unpleasant.

You can also get extra help in your job search through recruiting agencies that help job seekers find their dream position, like Connect Resources, one of the top-leading Dubai service providers.

Some other reviewed agencies you can use are:

Jivaro Partners (marketing & communications jobs), ESP International (conferences, events, hospitality), and  MCG & Associates (PR, publishing, marketing & communications jobs).

When you decide to work with an agency, look for companies that take a commission on the employer’s end, not yours.

You will be part of their talent pool, and when there is a vacancy that matches your academic qualifications, you will receive a call, and that may just be your great opportunity.

Another effective way you can get notifications on jobs is by downloading Job apps like Indeed and LinkedIn through which you will have a message anytime a new job notification pops up.

GET THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION

The type of work you intend to engage in will determine the type of visa you will need.

For example, if you are a freelancer or consultant what will be suitable is a freelance visa. In case you want to work on a part-time basis, you will prefer to remain on a tourist visa. In case you are looking for a long stay, the visa most economical would be a work visa which would be in most cases sponsored by the employer.

However, not all employers provide visas for their employees. The provision of a visa is subjective to the company or organization.

That being said, you can get into the country on a visitor or tourist visa for your job search and once you get a job, you transfer the visa status to a work visa.

Now you have to know where you stand because there are some nationalities that are legally allowed to remain for 90 days after arrival before applying for a work visa. Others are allowed to remain for 30 days and may even extend the right to 60 days renewable.

GET A LOCAL NUMBER

Once you get to Dubai, you should get a local number.

You can use your passport and visit visa to purchase a number upon entry from any of the two telecommunication providers (Du and Etisalat).

This is vital because you should be reachable to a recruiter intending to contact you. In most cases, recruiters prefer to have an initial telephone conversation with the applicant.

WORK ON YOUR CV AND SKILLS

The most important tool in your job search is your CV. So work on your CV as it is necessary and important to facilitate your task in getting a job in Dubai.

Dubai’s job market is very competitive and digitalized. Most recruiters make use of software to sort through the CVs of potential employees.

To benefit from this, it is important to customize your CV to the job you are applying for by using Keywords from the advertised vacancy.

The average recruiter will only spend six seconds checking your resume. Make your CV worth those six seconds.

You can make your CV stand out by :

  • Choosing a format that reflects your personality and also looks professional. Clearly state the kind of person you are and point out the strengths that make you best suitable for the job.
  • Include your necessary information, education, and other skills.
  • Anytime you apply for a job make sure to customize your CV to fit exactly the job description, this will increase your chances of getting called for the interview.

Work on yourself. You should know well what your strengths and weaknesses are. Focus on your skills and always learn new skills which are required. Learn to keep developing your skills even if you already have a job.

Do not apply for a job you are not qualified for. Just because you are excited about a company does not mean you should apply to jobs that are not a good fit for your skills.

Registering on job sites eg LinkedIn is a great way to get started on your job hunt. It is useful to know the requirements or vacancies that companies have and understand if there is demand for your specific set of skills.

You should register on as many job sites as possible with multiple applications. You never know where you can be called.

WHERE TO APPLY FOR JOBS IN DUBAI

Applying for jobs has never been easier and keeps getting better each day. Just like in most countries, there are sites that are always updated with job vacancies. Sites like these should be your best friend. Check out the below sites and set alerts for new job adverts for interested roles.

For experienced & Highly qualified professionals you can search for jobs on the sites below.

For all other job types

BUILD YOUR NETWORK TO GET A JOB IN DUBAI

You must have heard the saying your network is your net worth. This is not a cliche. I mentioned earlier about following staff who work in the companies you aspire to work in on LinkedIn. Make constructive/value-adding comments on their posts. Your goal is to get noticed. The reason for this is that companies have a referral system of recruitment. You stand a higher chance of getting recruited if you know someone in the company. Be visible.

On a side note, it is also important to maintain a professional look on all your social media platforms, because an employer will check them to have a clear understanding of the kind of person you are.

When you have a good profile, you will be easily found by recruiters and hiring managers. The LinkedIn website has all the information required to help you create a good profile or you can learn more here.

Also, use LinkedIn as a way of scanning the market for jobs. By setting up job alerts you will get familiar with who is hiring for what.

Participate in online events related to your field so that you make great connections with other professionals.

Your network is very important when looking for a job in Dubai.

“It is not what you know but who you know”.

How to get a job in Dubai

You can find jobs through networking, so try to increase your connections and be friendly with new people. Do not focus only on your circle as it is possible you can get a job from another connecting niche.

LEARN ARABIC

While this is not mandatory, it is a plus to knowing the local language (Arabic).

I can bet that in a case where you are with a candidate with similar strengths and skillsets, you who knows Arabic will be offered the position. Give yourself that edge and learn the language promptly.

Even if you do not fully know the language well, make an effort and learn the basics. The basics can help you interact well with people.

There are other important languages spoken by a majority of residents in the country e.g. Hindi etc. Learning one of these could be beneficial to you and will give you an edge over other candidates.

APPLY AND FOLLOW UP

When you apply for a job, it is possible to receive the call and go to the interview, and if you manage to impress the employer, you get called for the offer.

Did you also know in an event where you do not get the call you can follow up? That is to call the potential employer or send them an email to let them know that you are highly interested. When you do that, it will make a big difference from the rest of the candidates.

Companies have their contact numbers online and most companies have a toll-free line. You can call and request to speak to the HR person.

Doing research on Google or LinkedIn will facilitate this process by knowing who exactly the Human Resource manager is so that you can have direct communication with the Human Resource Manager by expressing your deep interest in the job.

YOUR LOCATION

I know a couple of people who were recruited to work in Dubai from their home countries eg Cameroon. While this is possible, the chance of getting a job out of the country is relatively slim. Employers would rather recruit from within the country to minimize any associated costs. Also while in Dubai, it’s important

In your job search, be patient. It takes time to find a job anywhere in the world and Dubai’s job market is particularly competitive. Simply follow all the aforementioned guidelines and be sure to grab that job.

It is a must-visit for anyone who visits Dubai and is looking for an adventure.

3. Ski Dubai

Dubai is home to the world’s first indoor ski resort that is open year-round with skiing activities, penguin interactions, and snow! Yes, snow indoors. Shops in Dubai offer a wide range of stores, from high-end international brands such as Burberry and Louis Vuitton to local shops selling traditional Emirati products such as incense and spices. There are big malls like the Mall of the Emirates, which have all the luxury brands on offer, and smaller malls like Al Ghurair Centre that offer more affordable prices.

Working in the UAE – 10 Things Expats must know before moving

The United Arab Emirates has over the years grown into a first-world country, with a lucrative oil and tourism industry that has attracted international interest. The country has become a world-class shopping destination that offers international brands such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton, while also making space for the local brands and fashion. Tech start-ups have mushroomed everywhere in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, making the country a new hub for business and innovation. With this activity and more, the UAE has become home to growth and opportunity, inviting thousands of expats to move and work here. With a current population of over 10 million people, almost 90% being expats, the UAE has become one of the fastest-growing nations in the world.

So, why is everyone rushing to live and work in UAE? Well, besides the growing job market, there are many benefits to living and working in UAE.

It is one of the safest countries in the world and perfect for young people and families. The cost of living in some of the emirates is relatively cheaper than in other countries around the world. Another remarkable benefit of working in the UAE is that residents enjoy a tax-free salary.

However, as green as the grass may be on the other side, there are huge adjustments to be made when choosing to relocate to a Middle Eastern country. Here are some things you must know before leaving to work in the UAE.

Cultural Differences

Moving to a new country always comes with culture shock. The UAE is a Muslim country, and there are some important cultural differences that you should be aware of before you pack your bags and move, in search of a new job and a new life. Firstly, once you start working, you will find the working days to be different. The first day of the working week is Sunday, while Friday is the beginning of the weekend. Although a law was passed changing the weekdays to the international norm, some companies still observe this calendar, and therefore it is worth preparing for. Secondly, working in the UAE means working in a multinational environment.

The UAE is a melting pot of cultures and diversity, where people from all over the world come to live and work. It allows one to learn about different cultures while also learning to be sensitive toward those differences.

Another cultural difference to be prepared for is Ramadan. In most countries around the world, Ramadan would come and go insignificantly. In the UAE, it alters your everyday life.

During Ramadan, working hours are reduced to accommodate those who are fasting. You will also find that all food outlets are closed until 6 pm. This goes for fast food outlets as well as restaurants. You are also not allowed to eat in public during Ramadan. And yes, it’s a law. Should you be seen eating in public, you are likely to be fined.

Salaries

What makes working in the UAE so attractive to the rest of the world? The salaries are a big factor. Workers in the UAE are said to be paid better than in most countries. What is even better is that your salary is tax-free. However, this is a misconception as it does not apply to everyone.

Workers are paid different wages based on their nationality. This is a sad reality of living and working in the UAE. Therefore, it is worth doing your research first before accepting a job and moving.

Attractive Packages

Another thing that attracts foreigners to move to the UAE and work is the benefits attached.  Many companies in UAE offer their staff accommodation and transport to work.  This is particularly true for jobs in the hospitality and tourism sector, those working in education, and many more sectors.  In some cases, food is also provided.  This is a great advantage because it means your money is not only tax-free but also free of expenses.  So, as you start your job hunting, it is worth taking this into consideration

Cost of Living

Although salaries for a lot of people are very desirable, the cost of living is not. Dubai is one of the most expensive cities to live in in the world. Rentals are shockingly high, and groceries are likely to put a strain on your pockets, as most food items are imported. This makes it difficult to save money for other things such as travel or an emergency fund, for those who are not lucky enough to get the perks mentioned above. But if you stick to your budget and live according to your means, you will be able to stay above water and even keep a financial cushion.

Family – Friendly

If you are looking to move with your family, and you are worried about how they will adjust to the new life, fear not.

The UAE is a good country to raise a family. Abu Dhabi in particular is an emirate that is family-friendly, due to its tranquil environment. From children’s parks to cater to toddlers, to the prestigious international schools and universities to enroll your older children. The UAE will easily become a second home for you and your family.

Female Sensitive

The UAE has managed to successfully create a safe space for women, Muslims,1 and Non-Muslims, by instilling social rules that protect women. For example, you may find separate facilities for women such as ATMs, and separate times at the gym for women only. This is to make sure that women do not have to wait in line or feel uncomfortable in certain spaces. Another thing you may find strange is that women are allowed to stop men from entering elevators if they choose to. So, if you are male and looking to live and work in UAE, you must be aware of these things as well as be sensitive.

Prepare for the heat

UAE is a desert country where temperatures can soar to 50 degrees Celsius. This will make anyone feel uncomfortable. Especially if you have to use public transport to go to and from work. I remember on some really hot days, I could feel the soles of my rubber shoes sticking to the tar. The silver lining to this is – the glorious air conditioning in every building and every bus stop offers great relief from the desert sun. Public transport is also air-conditioned keeping you cool and comfortable.

Great public transport

Public transport in UAE is a major part of the country’s infrastructure. The UAE has an extensive public transport system that links the major cities and towns. It is not only about buses, but also the metro systems. These public transport systems cover most of the city running on fixed routes. There are also taxis that can be hailed on the street or ordered to pick you up by phone or through their mobile application. The metro runs in Dubai only, and is one of the most efficient ways to get around town as it covers all areas of the city and has trains running every few minutes during peak hours.  Once you get used to everything, you will never be late for work. With such efficient public transport, who needs a car. I sure don’t.

Your employer knows everything

As an expat living and working in the UAE, your employer sponsors your work visa, and therefore everything – and I mean everything – will be under the company- from your ID number to your medical insurance, to your bank account.  You also need authorization from your company to get a driver’s license, and proof of employment to rent an apartment. This can make life difficult especially when going through a change of employment, as your current company will cancel your visa, giving your 30days to get a new job and have your new company organize a visa for you.  However, you should know that you can now apply for your own visa which gives you flexibility, but it is quite expensive.

Taking your passport

An important thing to know when you move to a new country with the hopes of living and working is to know the rules and your rights as a worker.  Some companies in the UAE have a tendency of holding their workers’ passports as a way of keeping them on the job.  This is a horrific situation that the UAE government has condemned.  Therefore, it is important to know the country’s labor laws so as not to be taken advantage of, and to know what steps to take should this happen to you.

The United Arab Emirates is a beautiful country with great opportunities available and living and working there is an amazing experience. I lived there for 3years which formed a basis for my outlook on the world and possibilities.

Like any country, you will experience ups and downs, but overall, you will gain top-notch experience and knowledge.  You make life-long friendships and partnerships.  You will get to see some of the world’s best places.  It is an experience of a lifetime. Click the link below
